Australia’s Health report also finds 30% of Covid-related deaths since start of pandemic occurred in residential aged care
Comprehensive data on the impact of the pandemic on people with disability is lacking. As of 1 May, there had been a total of 12,721 Covid-19 cases reported in National Disability Insurance Scheme participants and 74 Covid-related deaths since the start of the pandemic, the report found. This is an underestimate, since many people with disability are not NDIS participants.
Australia’s Health includes other key findings on the health system, life expectancy, and factors that can influence health. The data shows one in three people had a chronic respiratory condition such as hay fever, asthma or chronic sinusitis in 2020–21. Almost half of Australians were estimated to have one or more of 10 selected chronic conditions .
The report found there have been gains in some areas. Seven in 10 people survived at least five years after a cancer diagnosis during 2014–2018, an improvement from about 50% in 1989–1993.
