Security experts have decried the growing safety concerns in Nigeria’s rail sector.
“To be proactive is to deter opportunities for sabotage and attack, and to be reactive is to respond with immediate measures when there is an incident. So, this government must be proactive even before it leaves because lives are being lost every day,” he said.
“Imagine those exposures, imagine the losses of those that are in business, that pay taxes, but could not meet their timelines and strategic plans, because of that derailment. Who will compensate the Nigerians, who will pay tax on what the Nigerians have lost? This is a government that cannot even make an institution function professionally; it is a dilemma.”
Speaking further, she said the government would have to do a clear assessment of the railway routes, build motion sensors in the area close to the railway, recruit locals to help with surveillance and rapid response, build pavements in strategic areas near the rail line so that suspicious criminal activities could be spotted easily.
