A well-taken Julio Alvarez strike in the 31st minute was all that separated them as the EPL champions put on a dominant display. Both sides had a cagey start but City soon asserted themselves courtesy of sleek passing, forcing a moment of lapse in concentration from Newcastle. Phil Foden found Alvarez in space on the edge of the box and the young Argentine expertly fired into the top corner to score the winner.
