Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate opens up about how personal tragedies impacted his performance during the 2025-26 season. Learn more about his struggles
Liverpool defender, Ibrahima Konaté, has admitted that personal tragedies contributed to a dip in his form during the 2025–26 season, as he reflected on a difficult campaign both on and off the pitch.
The defender, who made 51 appearances, 49 of them starts, for Liverpool, was a regular figure in the side but struggled to consistently reproduce the high levels he had shown in previous seasons as the club finished fifth in the Premier League. Konaté, who has earned 27 caps for the France national football team, remains part of Didier Deschamps’ squad as France prepare for the World Cup.
As reported by BBC Sport on Thursday, reflecting on the season, Konaté pointed to a series of personal losses that left him emotionally drained while still trying to maintain his performances at the highest level.
“All of these tragic events happened so quickly and as soon as I felt like I was getting my head above water, something else happened,” he said. Despite the difficulties, Konaté said he leaned on support from those around him but also felt the responsibility to keep going for his team.
“I had the support of all these fans, who are exceptional at Liverpool, my team-mates and especially my family but I also had to learn how to get back on my feet on my own because the team needed me more than ever and I know that my father would have wanted me to get back,” he stressed. Konaté’s comments highlight the emotional strain behind his performances last season, even as he remained a key part of Liverpool’s defence and continued his international role with France.
