The Nigerian Medical Association, Enugu State branch, on Sunday disclaimed the purported suspension of its Chairman, Dr Ike Okwesili, by some members of the body, describing it as a hoax and mischievo
us.
There were reports in some sections of the media that the branch of the NMA, after its virtual emergency general meeting on July 24, suspended Okwesili for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office. The group claimed that the virtual meeting, in which only 30 out of over 2,000 members of the association in the state participated, appointed the deputy vice chairman, Dr Onyekachi Ugwuonye, to act as chairman pending the determination of the matter by the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee of the body.
But the state NMA, in a letter with Ref. NMA/ENUGU/240720/622, addressed to the zonal chairmen, heads of affiliates, CMDs/MDs of tertiary health institutions and its members, titled, ‘Re: purported suspension of the NMA Enugu State Chairman – disclaimer’, described the report as malicious. The letter, which was made available to our correspondent on Sunday, was signed by Dr Ike Okwesili and Dr Emmanuel Aneke, chairman and secretary of the brach NMA, respectively.
