The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property of its citizens. Every responsible government prioritises this responsibility. The Babajide Sanwo-Olu government in Lagos State may be scored a pass mark in its efforts towards meeting this responsibility. One of the efforts put in place by the state government recently is the ban imposed on the operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, on major roads in some local governments.
The advent of the global pandemic coronavirus made the Lagos State Government to impose stricter measures on residents of the state to help contain the spread of the virus that has made the state its epicentre in Nigeria. One of such measures is the total ban on okada across the state. In recent times, I have witnessed, on several occasions, how the police and other security operatives working with them to enforce the ban would chase okada riders with their vans and other vehicle in a bid to arrest the riders and seize their motorcycles.
In an effort to ensure the security of lives and property in Lagos State, the state government needs to also ensure not to worsen the security situation it is trying to improve on. A total ban on okada across the state poses a higher security threat to residents of the state. The reasons for my submission are not far-fetched. The okada business has become the major means of livelihood for thousands of households in Lagos.
