September 13, 2026 12:44 pmand Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, have backed Dario Amodei’s call for the artificial intelligence industry to slow the pace of capabilities development.that AI’s growing ability to build the next generation of AI models is accelerating its advancement, saying the industry must slow the pace of capabilities development.
He said the rapid progress in AI could eventually outrun humanity’s ability to understand and control the systems if adequate safeguards are not put in place. The CEO said the risks require more than investment in prevention, arguing that the pace of AI development should be slowed to give safety measures time to keep up.
On his part, Altman also said he agrees with Amodei that the industry needs to “pace the frontier”, adding that “the issue has been a primary topic of discussions at OpenAI in recent weeks”. He also supported Amodei’s proposal for independent evaluators to have employee-like access to AI companies.
“Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We’ll have more to share soon,” Altman said. The Anthropic CEO had proposed a three-step framework, which he called “pacing the frontier”, to ensure AI development proceeds at a balanced rate while maintaining safety and achieving its benefits. His proposed framework includes embedded third-party evaluators, coordination among frontier AI companies in democratic countries, and global coordination involving governments.
