The Ekiti State Government has warned land owners against the arbitrary selling of farmlands due to the rise in violent disputes over land across the state. Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, highlighted the issues during a mediation session in Ado Ekiti, emphasizing the need to stop such practices and prevent further conflict.

Sequel to cases of fierce battles being fought in some towns over land disputes , the Ekiti State Government has issued a stern warning to land owners against the arbitrary selling of farmlands. The government asserts that such actions are the primary trigger of violence in many communities across the state.

During a mediation session in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, the Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, addressed a land dispute between Eda Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government and Isan Ekiti in Oye Council Area. This intervention was a direct follow-up to a petition by land owners from Ilale Quarters in Isan Ekiti, who accused the people of Ilije and Eda Odo in Eda Oniyo Ekiti of encroaching upon the lands at the Igbo-Ero farmstead, located at the border area between the two towns. In response, Afuye directed the Ekiti State Boundary Technical Committee to visit the disputed land to conduct proper demarcation to help broker a truce. She specifically warned the contending forces not to allow self-interest to exacerbate tensions. Afuye also highlighted that the indiscriminate selling of lands by farmers and land owners from both towns was the root cause of the problem. She expressed regret over the behaviors of those who could not foresee the consequences of their actions. The Deputy Governor emphasized the need to stop such practices, as they are prevalent across nearly all towns. However, she also commended the two traditional rulers for their efforts to prevent violence
