The Edo State Ministry of Mining, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, shut down two illegal mining sites operating without licenses and in violation of environmental regulations.

The Edo State Ministry of Mining, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, took decisive action on Wednesday by shutting down two illicit mining sites within the state. This information was revealed in a statement released on Friday by Grace Oakhiena, the Public Relations Officer for the Edo State Ministry of Mining.

The statement disclosed that the targeted sites, located in Erhua Community near Ehor in Edo South and Iruekpen communities in Edo Central, were shut down following a rigorous inspection. Investigations revealed that these sites were operating without the necessary licenses and were blatantly disregarding both environmental regulations and established mining ethics. The inspection team, led by Andrew Ijegbai, the state Commissioner for Mining, uncovered substantial evidence of environmental degradation and hazardous activities at both sites. Commissioner Ijegbai expressed deep concern over the situation, condemning the illicit mining operations and reaffirming the state's unwavering commitment to eradicating such activities within the mining sector. He emphasized the profound impact illegal mining has on the environment and surrounding communities, and pledged the state's collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to eliminate these illegal operations and promote sustainable mining practices. Ijegbai detailed the specific dangers posed by each site. The Erhua site was found operating perilously close to a federal road and excavating directly beneath high-tension lines, creating significant risks to the community. The Iruekpen site was discovered to be operating without a license, lacking consent from relevant authorities, and failing to conduct an environmental impact assessment. These operations not only inflict damage upon the environment but also jeopardize the safety and well-being of residents in the affected areas, while also posing a threat to the state's power infrastructure. Governor Monday Okpehbolo has instructed a thorough investigation into illegal mining operations within the state, with a view to implementing a comprehensive ban
