THE Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Joe Acha, has said the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme has enhanced the state’s criminal justice system and commended the British Council and European Union for backing the initiative.
Acha stated this at RoLAC’s dissemination and close-out event in Benin City at the weekend, which is part of its mandate to strengthen the application of the law and curb corruption.
The Edo Chief Judge said the RoLAC has been part of the reforms that have taken place in the justice sector of the state. She added, “For the first time, magistrates visit detention centres all over the state—not just prisons, but all detention centres run by the police, EFCC, and ICPC—and release persons who are unduly held in detention. That is a major aspect of RoLAC’s work and intervention, which I think has done a lot for us.
“We know about plea bargains, sentencing guidelines, and other things. RoLAC has intervened in several areas of our activities, and judicial officers, magistrates, and presidents are trained regularly by ROLAC on this initiative.”
