An Edo State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Benin, on Friday, sentenced a 33-year-old man, Bala Ali, to six months’ imprisonment for unlawfully obtaining the sum of N45,750 and an itel phone worth N2,2
00 from one Badamasi Ibrahim.“Honestly, I cannot explain how he got the money from me. I believe he must have used a charm to take the money from me because I can’t just explain it,” Ibrahim said.
The victim, who begged the court to help him retrieve the money, explained that the way the convict took the money from him made him to look foolish to his friends and family. Ali was arraigned on one count of unlawfully obtaining money from his victim, which was said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.Ali pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
The police prosecutor, Patrick Agbonifo, informed the court that the offence was committed on November 16, 2019, in the Oredo Local Government Area of the state. The presiding Magistrate, Ivie Akere, sentenced Bala to six months’ imprisonment without an option of fine.All rights reserved.
