The Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS) plans to deploy youth observers alongside traditional missionsto monitor Nigeria's 2027 polls. Serigne Ka, head of ECOWAS' electoral assistance division, said the goal is to increase youth participation in electoral and political processes.
The initiative has been piloted in Côte d'Ivoire and Benin and will be used for upcoming elections in Cabo Verde and The Gambia. Ka stressed the need for political parties to open their structures to greater youth participation, noting the significant underrepresentation of young people despite their large population share. He identified access to finance as a major barrier to meaningful political participation.
Ezenwa Nwagwu, executive director of PAACA, supported the initiative, stating that young people must educate themselves on electoral laws to ensure responsible observation.
