Intermittent fasting has its benefits but extending living beings’ lifespan might not be one of them, according to a recentstudy. Instead, the mouse study revealed that restricting the amount of calories you consume might be more beneficial for a longer lifespan.
In a press release, Gary Churchill, a professor at The Jackson Laboratory in Maine, said: “Our study really points to the importance of resilience. The most robust animals keep their weight on even in the face of stress and caloric restriction, and they are the ones that live the longest. It also suggests that a more moderate level of calorie restriction might be the way to balance long-term health and lifespan.
To compare the effectiveness of restricting the intake of calories and intermittent fasting, Churchill and colleagues made five groups of mice follow different types of diets. One group was allowed to eat whatever they pleased at any time of the day.
“Whether intermittent fasting and caloric restriction would extend lifespan in humans awaits definitive investigation. Owing to differences in metabolic rates, the human equivalent of these dietary restriction interventions is unclear.
