THE blockade of the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission by the Department of State Services operatives highlights the impunity of Nigeria’s security agencies. Ostensibly laying claim to ownership of the premises, the secret police as usual, resorted to self-help, believing itself above the law.
To entrench democracy and respect for the rule of law, he should remove Yusuf Bichi, the DSS Director-General, and replace him with a competent professional who will not only help secure the country, but will have utmost respect for the rule of law. This should be extended to all current security chiefs who have either fallen short of expectations, or have been caught out in serial violations of court orders and the rule of law.
Osinbajo demonstrated the courage and perspicuity expected in a country governed by laws and aspiring to democratic global best practices. To signal Nigeria’s break from that era of lawlessness, disregard for the rule of law and the rambunctious inter-agency rivalry that impaired the war against crime, terrorism, and corruption, Tinubu should immediately sweep away agency heads that have demonstrated their disdain for due process and are steeped in inter-agency bickering.
EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, recalled that the two agencies had been sharing the facility for over 20 years. “By denying operatives access to their offices, the commission’s operations at its largest hub with over 500 personnel, hundreds of exhibits, and many suspects in detention have been disrupted,”said Uwujaren.
