Boeing and Caterpillar earnings are key factors in Dow's early triple-digit skid
U.S. stocks on Wednesday opened firmly lower, with weak results from Boeing Co. BA, -1.02% and Caterpillar Inc. CAT, -4.54% weighing on the Dow and the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.32% declined 140 points , or 0.5%, to reach 27,205, the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.00% slipped 0.3% to 2,997, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.03% retreated 0.3% to hit 8,230. Early Wednesday, Facebook shares fell after the it formally announced a $5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission for deceiving users about its privacy practices. Facebook is due to report second-quarter earnings after the close of trade Wednesday.
