A group of technical experts is studying if a saliva test could detect a coronavirus infection, Department of Health spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire says
A panel is now gathering information on the experiences of other countries on this testing method, which is said to be much simpler than the traditional way of detecting the deadly COVID-19 virus.
The method uses samples of saliva, which are easier to collect, but initial observations showed the test was a more “tedious” procedure because they may be food particles in the saliva, Vergeire noted. Researchers from the Yale School of Public Health created the saliva-based laboratory diagnostic tool called SalivaDirect, which received emergency use authorization from the United States Food and Drug Administration over the weekend,
The SalivaDirect test does not require a specific swab collection device. It can also be used with reagents from multiple vendors.
