Conservation is a messy business, and as the folks at this US zoo could tell you, sometimes you need to get your hands dirty - literally.
The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens has built up the world's largest collection of polar bear poo, with 30,000 samples from across the US and Canada, WLWT-TV has reported. Proving that science really can find a use for anything, it's being studied by researchers at the zoo's Centre for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife to help develop a pregnancy test.Scientist Erin Curry says researchers are comparing compounds in faecal matter from females that are pregnant with those that aren't in the hope of finding specific compounds.
And proving in turn that there's never an excuse to not make things a bit more fabulous, some samples are even marked with glitter to help differentiate which poo dropped from which bear. Fewer than 25,000 polar bears remain in the wild, and only 11 breeding pairs remain in North American zoos.
