Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Cross River State, Dr Agam Ayuk, talks to ADA WODU about the controversy surrounding the management of the coronavirus pandemic by the state governmentThere is an official confirmation of the status. We have five confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Cross River State. It is a welcome development in the sense that residents of Cross River, even for us in the health sector, know that we now have COVID-19.
Why do you think it is taking the state government so long to admit that the pandemic is in the state? Medical and dental practitioners work on science and evidence. We don’t know why it took them so long. They are in a better place to explain and to defend themselves. But for us, we appreciate the efforts of the Presidential Task Force led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; and the Minister of Health, Prof Osagie Ehanire, for the team in Cross River that was led by the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Faisal Shuaibu.
Although the strike has been called off, was the decision of medical doctors in the state to withdraw their services the right option at such a critical period? If we didn’t think the strike was the right decision, we wouldn’t have withdrawn our services. Now, there is a commitment on the issue of contact tracing, testing, and those infected will be cared for by the state government. That is the commitment we have got. That is yet to be seen. Now that we have officially confirmed cases, we will watch out for what happens. We will see how the situation is being managed. We have not assessed the issue of contact tracing and surveillance.
