Operatives of the Lagos Police's Rapid Response Squad (RRS) apprehended a 42-year-old suspected army impersonator for allegedly abducting and robbing a man of his valuables. RRS disclosed this information in a post on its official X handle, @rrsLagos767, on Wednesday. According to the post, the suspect, a dismissed army sergeant and former convict, was arrested on Saturday at Ikeja Underbridge. The suspect was identified by one of his victims near Computer Village, Ikeja.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on December 30th, 2024, the suspect accused his victim of accidentally stumbling upon him. He claimed to have lost a gold ring in the process and demanded that the victim produce it. The suspect then claimed to be an army officer, displaying an identification card. He further threatened that if the victim couldn't find the ring, he would be taken to the army barracks in Oshodi. At this point, the suspect contacted an accomplice who arrived on a motorcycle. He then forcibly took the victim on the motorbike. Under the pretense of taking him to the Army Cantonment, they drove him to Third Mainland Bridge, where they robbed him of his iPhone 13 and money before abandoning him. Further investigations revealed that the suspect sold the iPhone 13 for N150,000 in Computer Village, Ikeja. RRS stated that the suspect was previously arrested in 2024 in Ikeja and imprisoned for a similar crime. During the arrest, a Nigerian Army cap and a fake Nigerian Army identity card were recovered from him. The suspect has been transferred to the CP's Special Squad for further investigation
