As the SIM registration deadline approaches, the Department of Information and Communications Technology says it discussed the possible extension of the registration with telecommunication companies.
As the SIM registration deadline approaches, the Department of Information and Communications Technology on Monday said it discussed the possible extension of the registration with telecommunication companies.. We advise everyone to await the official announcement of the department on the matter," the DICT said in a statement.
Three days before the April 26 deadline, data from the National Telecommunications Commissions show only 82.8 million SIMs were registered out of over 168 million SIMs. It means only 49.3% of SIMs were registered since the start of the implementation of the SIM Registration Act in December. Globe Telecom, Smart, and DITO Telecommunity said the lack of valid IDs is the main problem of subscribers when registering their SIMs.
The DICT said it talked with the telcos on resolving the barriers in getting government-issued IDs and documents as well as improvements in the SIM registration process. "To reiterate, only one of the 17 accepted government-issued IDs and documents is needed to proceed with the registration," the agency added.
