Thousands of people have been evacuated
This is the moment people in southern India watched on in horror as a house fell into floodwaters on Sunday.
Drenched locals looked on helplessly as the property was swept away, before walking along a path to follow its progress downstream. P.K. Jayasree, the top government official in Kottayam district where the landslide took place, said almost half of the casualties were from a single family.A distraught man told Kerala news channel Manorama TV from Koottickal, in Kottayam: ‘It was my livelihood. Everything is gone.’
Kerala also suffered badly in 2018, when its worst floods in a century killed at least 400 people and displaced around 200,000. India, which has a population of 1.3 billion, relies on rainfall to support its people, but torrential downpours can cause floods, landslides and water-borne diseases.
