Senators will vote again on a bipartisan immigration deal that was rejected by the House earlier this year.

Inflatable balls are seen stuck on barbed wire at the border walls separating Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego Tuesday, May 7, 2024, in San Diego. that was rejected by the House earlier this year with lawmakers in both parties trying to navigate the border and its security as a key issue in the upcoming November election.

In the aftermath of the deal’s failure, Republicans and Democrats have been engaged in a blame game for failing to get the border under better control. Democrats have accused former President Donald Trump and Republicans of intentionally sabotaging the deal to prevent a legislative victory for Biden ahead of the election while Republicans accuse Democrats of causing the crisis and refusing to act.

“If all this bill does is to remind voters that Democrats have tried to do something on the border and that Donald Trump actually has helped to prevent that from happening and has been an obstructing force in that process, if that's the only thing that voters take away from it, then I think it'll be a win for Democrats,” said Chris Devine, an associate professor of political science at the University of Dayton.

The bill, which is highly unlikely to make it through a Senate vote, is also certain to meet the same fate as the original attempt. House GOP leadership said in a statement Monday morning that the bill would once again be “dead on arrival” to the lower chamber.
