Violence erupts between Itsekiri and Urhobo youths in Warri over territorial disputes. Delta State Governor appeals for peace and unity.

Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a call for calm and restraint following reports of a violent clash between Itsekiri and Urhobo youths in Warri South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. Numerous individuals sustained injuries yesterday as youths from the two ethnic groups engaged in a confrontation rooted in alleged claims of territorial ownership in Warri .

The initial incident took place around 5:30 pm near the popular Ibo market/Okere road when a group of Itsekiri youths were reportedly attacked by youths from Agbara, an Urhobo community. It was further reported that a similar altercation, stemming from the same reason, occurred simultaneously at Okere market, a boundary area between Itsekiri and Urhobo communities. .\Dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, clubs, and guns, were allegedly wielded by the youths from both sides. Socio-economic activities ground to a halt as stores in the bustling areas were hastily closed, and residents retreated indoors for safety. Personnel from the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Army faced a significant challenge in restoring order to the volatile situation.\In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori appealed to residents and all stakeholders in the oil city to refrain from actions that could undermine the prevailing peace and stability in the region. He emphasized that his administration remains dedicated to revitalizing infrastructure in Warri, stressing that peace is paramount to unlocking the city's vast economic potential and sustaining ongoing development initiatives. He urged community leaders, youth groups, and opinion leaders to collaborate in fostering understanding, unity, and peaceful coexistence among the diverse ethnic groups. He reiterated his administration's commitment to promoting inclusive governance and equitable development across the state and assured that security agencies were deployed to maintain peace and order
