A retired navy head has pushed support for nuclear submarines, claiming it will deliver “one hell of a punch” to Australia’s adversaries, amid mounting criticisms aimed at AUKUS.

Former commodore of the Australian Navy Peter Scott told Sky News Australia the AUKUS nuclear submarines were “absolutely the right way to go” to secure the nation’s strategic defence.

“I think the clarity is there with the pathway that’s been articulated to tell us what capability we need and when, the priority is going to come because it is a nuclear-powered submarine and there’s just no option for half measures there. His comments follow concerns of AUKUS' efficacy raised by members of parliament, including three from within the Labor Party, the Greens, former prime minister Paul Keating and shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie.

However, Mr Scott maintained that Australia’s “geographic and geostrategic circumstances demand the nuclear submarine capability”.
