Getting enough sleep is vital for overall health. Numerous studies have shown that poor sleep is a risk factor for cognitive issues, including memory loss.
Recent research further reinforces the critical role sleep plays in memory consolidation and may aid scientists in developing preventive strategies against dementia, a general term for a decline in mental abilities.
The institute noted that the human brain remains highly active while people are asleep, stating that sleep consists of different stages that repeat several times each night. As the keynote speaker on the theme, ‘Comprehensive Sleep Health: Exploring the Interplay Between Sleep, Health, and Economic Development in Emerging Economies’, Erhabor said deep sleep, also known as slow-wave sleep, is the most restorative sleep stage.
Deep sleep, he noted, is linked to the brain’s ability to detoxify itself, particularly through the glymphatic system, which clears out harmful proteins like beta-amyloid, a substance associated with Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects memory, thinking, and behaviour.
He said, “Sleep health management requires input from multiple specialties, including neurology, Ear, Nose, and Throat experts, dentistry, cardiology, and anaesthesiology. The country lacks an adequate number of functional sleep laboratories. “Sleep may also give the brain time to make space for new memories by removing or reducing the strength of neural links tied to memories that are no longer useful. During human development, a process called pruning culls excess neuronal links,” the school stated.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, sleep is an important part of the daily routine. The institute noted that everyone needs sleep, saying that it affects almost every type of tissue and system in the body, from the brain, heart, and lungs to metabolism, immune function, mood, and disease resistance.
