The Gimbiyar Lau, Hajiya Mamma Fati Ibrahim Hassan Lau, has urged the federal authorities to declare the reconstruction of Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State a national emergency.
Answering questions from journalists on Sunday in the state, Gimbiyar Lau, who lost three of her family members in the tragic boat mishap that occurred at the collapsed bridge site on Saturday, called on both the federal and state governments to, as a matter of urgency, begin reconstruction work on the long-abandoned bridge.
learnt that the accident, which occurred at the site of the collapsed bridge, involved eight of her relatives. While five were rescued, one body has been recovered and two others remain missing as rescue efforts enter the third day. Describing the incident as a 'preventable tragedy', she blamed years of governmental neglect for the reliance on unsafe water transportation in the area, particularly perilous during the rainy season when river levels rise dangerously.
