On February 25, 2023, I spoke through the ballot for you to do the following: one, fix the economy and two, tackle insecurity. In my estimation, when these two are fixed, Nigeria will become a great country which everyone, young or old, will be proud of.
Mr President-elect, I should have started this open letter by extending pleasantries to you on your election or at best wait till your inauguration on May 29. But pardon me, I had to bask in the euphoria of your victory with the belief that you are aware of the urgent task of nation building ahead.
During electioneering across many states, I noticed the inscription ‘Nation Builders’ on your party’s campaign Buses. With the inscription in mind, I believe you are fully aware that our nation is in need of builders, those who can relate with our daily challenges, who understand the frustration and aggression of Nigerians especially the youth, who are ready to tackle inflation and unemployment that have risen to 21.82 per cent and 33.
I believe you when you know the challenges ahead with your slogan, ‘Hope is here.’ When you said you will ‘hit the ground running,’ I know you will walk your talk. Thus, your message of ‘Renewed Hope’ resonates with the dream and aspiration for a better country and that is why you earned and those of millions others who voted for you. Since you emerged victorious at the polls, you now carry a badge of leadership and a burden of responsibility. You now owe us a debt of performance.
At Chatham House, London, you demonstrated how you intend to drive your administration through teamship. I have no doubt in your capacity to do this. However, I take special interest in the quality, nature and character of the people that would eventually join you on this journey – from your aides to the cabinet members. I am aware of your preference for a government of national competence.
Security of life and property is the foremost responsibility of the government. No doubt, Boko Haram attacks in the North-East have been decimated but not completely defeated. There is a call of duty in this regard. Much more is the menace of farmer-herders crises, banditry, robbery and kidnapping across the country.
