Kombowei is the eldest child of a former Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Monday Sinclair.
He talks about his father’s life and career with SIMON UTEBORI am a music producer, an on-air personality, a musician, entertainment consultant and motivational speaker. We are eight children and our mother is Clarice Sinclair. I am the first child. We are three boys and five girls. By the grace of God, all of us are married and have children. Our father is a lucky man to see all his eight children have their own children.
It helped me grow quicker than my age mates because I got used to people telling me that I was always dressing as an old man but I was quite young. Like I said, we did not have much but the primary school I attended was school for the bourgeoisie in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but we were living in the ghetto of Diobu then. My father ensured I attended school with rich men’s children. I knew what it cost him then – schools were free then but that particular school was paying N26 in the early 70s. I was a footballer. I had an accident; everybody was looking forward to my being a football star.
He climaxed as the Coach of the Super Eagles in 1997. Apart from that, which other clubs or teams did he coach before then? He was able to transit a lot of kids from secondary school to Sharks. He was good with the young ones. He is more of a teacher-father figure than a coach. If he tells you this is how you are going to trap the ball and per adventure you don’t understand, he will start again and tell you to play the ball to him and he will show you how to do it. Not many coaches will do that.
My father is a funny man. A lot of people do not know that about him. His sense of humour is amazing. He is a bookworm; if he is not coaching, he is reading. If you give him money now, he will tell somebody to take him to the mall to shop for books. He has a fantastic library and a lot of people who went through the university in Rivers State used the library. He reads everything and he still does till date. I imbibe reading culture from him. Today, I am an avid reader.
