The newly sworn-in Head of Service in Cross River State, Dr Innocent Eteng, has confirmed that they will embark on the recruitment of new civil servants very soon. Governor Bassey Otu had mentioned that over 80 per cent of civil servants would retire by year-end and that the development would significantly deplete the workforce. When

he swore in Eteng a few days ago, Otu, who described the civil service as the engine room of government, disclosed that arrangement was on to see how to retain a few of them by extending their services. He had charged Eteng not to encourage tribalism and nepotism in office and when the recruitment began. In an interview, the Head of Service said, 'We are going to embark on a recruitment process very soon to bring in young men and women to replace the retired ones.

It will follow all civil service recruitment rules. 'We will also embark on reforms which will be in line with global best practices with the aim of repositioning the state civil service.' Meanwhile, speaking to mark World Teachers Day, the chairman of the Cross River State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Gregory Olayi, appealed that they need as many as 10,000 new teachers to be recruited into the state teaching service to energize the system.
