Crisis looms in PDP as Atiku supports move to remove Damagum as party’s chairman

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has backed efforts to unseat Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party .

Atiku and Wike's relationship soured during the lead-up to the 2023 general elections when Wike led a faction of governors opposing Atiku’s presidential bid. “He encouraged us to stay motivated and continue advocating for the PDP Constitution to be followed in the NWC’s daily decisions. He understands our reasons for wanting Damagum removed and did not disagree.

The PDP NWC has been under pressure due to Damagum’s actions, particularly after he handed control of the Rivers State PDP structure to Wike, bypassing the incumbent governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
