COVID-19 complications more likely in pregnant women with hypertension, diabetes –Gynaecologists

Maternal and child health experts have urged pregnant women with underlying health conditions like hypertension, diabetes to be more careful if they get infected with COVID-19 as they are more prone to severe complications from the disease.

In his presentation, Shittu, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, said, “Pregnant women with comorbidities like hypertension; diabetes; asthma; HIV; TB, heart, liver, lung, kidney, or blood disease; immune suppression are more prone to severe COVID-19 and complications. According to him, this was a problem for reproductive health emergencies such as unplanned pregnancies for the women who could not access care.

“The system has witnessed a disruption of supply chains & referral systems including product expiry which has implications for product availability at points of service delivery”, he said. “There is no known difference between the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 in pregnant and non-pregnant women of reproductive age.”
