A Delta State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Issele-Uku has ordered the remand of Prince Chukwunonso Nwoko, aka Obi Nonso, and five others in police custody for alleged murder.

The Homicide Section of the state police command had charged the Idumuje-Ugboko prince after concluding investigation into his alleged involvement in the murder and unlawful disposal of the body of a motorcyclist, Cyprian Kumaoro, during the 2017 communal violence allegedly instigated by Chukwunonso.

Chukwunonso was charged alongside Chetachukwu Okolo, Onyeisi Isuzor, Ifejoku Okey, Prince Ejimofor Nwoko and Prince Obiajulu Richard Nwoko for murder and criminal conspiracy. The prince was arrested by a team of policemen on July 17, 2020, and released on his recognisance the following day. He was later invited for further questioning over Kumaoro’s murder following the confession of two suspects earlier arrested and charged on the same matter.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, had stated at a press briefing that “nobody was above the law and anyone, who has committed a crime as serious as murder, will face justice.” The court ordered Chukwunonso and others to be remanded in the state police command’s detention facility as the correctional centres were not admitting new inmates due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All rights reserved.
