A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Nigerian Army to let a soldier who insulted the Chief of Army Staff. Lt.Gen Tukur Buratai, have access to his lawyer and relatives.
A Lance Corporal, Martins Idakpani, had been detained and denied access to his relative and lawyer for a month for insulting Buratai and the military leadership in a video that went viral on social media.
Activist, Tope Akinyode, subsequently took up the case and sued the Nigerian Army, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Attorney-General of the Federation for breach of fundamental human rights. Akinyode, who is the National President, Revolutionary Lawyers’ Forum, said the court mandated the army to immediately grant Idakpani access to his lawyer and family.
