A Perth council is hoping that planning guidelines will strengthen protections for established trees on subdivided land, but how realistic is it to build around a tree?
Bayswater councillor Giorgia Johnson said she would like to see more trees retained when land was subdivided for new builds.
"In 10 or 15 or 50 years' time, it really won't matter who approved it, but the benefits of the tree will have been there for generations."While the council is planting 1,000 trees a year on public land in an effort to increase the canopy, Ms Johnson said it was vital to stem losses as well. This week the council resolved to ask the planning commission to extend Bayswater's policy on tree retention across the entire state.
