The Vice Chairman of the Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Mr Brian Alagha, has denied reports in a section of the media that he appointed a 118-year-old woman, Mrs Omonigbalebo
Orogono, as his special adviser on Elders’ Matters.
In a statement by his aide, Mr Woyeingidipamo Victor, Alagha said the elderly woman was among the beneficiaries of his special welfare scheme for the elderly in the council area. He said the inclusion of Orogono’s name in the welfare scheme was in line with the Ijaw tradition of honouring the oldest person in a community.
He said, “The old woman in question can barely walk or talk and her inclusion was to enable her to benefit from the monthly stipends. “There are several beneficiaries of the special scheme for the elderly and everyone deserves equal opportunity, no matter the age as this is the problem with our society when it concerns the old.”All rights reserved.
