The iconic soap star is renowned for her portrayal of Rita
Tanner and is the soap's second longest-serving cast member, behind William Roache's Ken Barlow. Barbara first appeared as the iconic character back in 1964 when Dennis Tanner recognised her as the belly dancer who worked at the Viaduct Sporting Club.
The 89-year-old remains a mainstay on the Cobbles and has recently been drawn into the show's major storyline as Stephen Reid continues to wreak havoc in Weatherfield. ITV's showbiz correspondent said: "Coronation Street fans will be elated to know that Barbara Knox, who played Rita since 1964, has signed a new deal. "According to co-star, Sally Ann Matthews, Barbara doesn't take it for granted saying every year she thinks she's not going to get another contract. "Ms Knox will be turning 90 later this year making her the second oldest soap star, just behind her pal, 91-year-old Bill Roache.
