Coronavirus Death Toll Now Above 360, Higher Than SARS

DAVID MCNEW / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / AFPChina’s death toll from a new coronavirus jumped above 360 on Monday to surpass the number of fatalities of its SARS crisis two decades ago, with dozens of people dying in the epicentre’s quarantined ground-zero.
In China, all but one of the 57 new deaths reported Monday were in Wuhan and the rest of Hubei province, most of which has been under lockdown for almost two weeks to stop people leaving and transmitting the virus. Hundreds of firms tumbled by the maximum 10 percent as investors got their first chance in more than a week to react to a barrage of bad news from the spiralling outbreak.
The first of those, a 1,000-bed facility, was due to open on Monday, just 10 days after construction began. Roads in Wenzhou, 800 kilometres to the east, were closed and its nine million people were ordered to stay indoors.
