The knowledge-sharing agreement is between the NWMO and its French counterpart, the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management. Announcements like this demonstrate that deep geological repositories – including the ones that will be built in Canada and France – are no longer a theoretical approach but are very much a reality with major projects moving forward in several countries, states a release.
Both France and Canada recognize the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel is of the utmost priority and both countries enjoy significant expertise and experiences they can share to ensure that both people and the environment are protected for the very long-term. Other senior government and nuclear sector representatives were in attendance for the signing including François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s minister of innovation, science and industry; Sylvie Retallieau, France’s minister of higher education and research; and Michel Miraillet, France’s ambassador to Canada.
