France will hold an international architectural competition to replace the spire of the Notre-Dame Cathedral
Urgent works in the coming days and weeks will include propping up the gable of the north facade and putting an "umbrella" in place to stop rain getting in where the cathedral's stone vaulting has collapsed.
Fire official Jose Vaz de Matos told a news conference that firefighters had saved the cathedral by focusing their efforts on preventing the fire in the roof from reaching the northern bell tower. "Once you have lost the war for the bell tower, then you've lost the cathedral, because each collapse would lead to another," he said.
A spokesman for the company that was working on the roof on Monday before the blaze broke out told dpa it had ruled out any liability on its part for the fire.
