OPINION: 'Canada has a byzantine system of recognizing skills and credentials that can leave newcomers wondering why they came to Canada in the first place,' writes MP Brad Redekopp in an op-ed for iPolitics.

That’s why immigration is so important. Canada is no longer producing enough domestic tradespeople, pilots, nurses and the multitude of other workers our economy needs. Conservatives want to unlock Canada’s economic potential. We want to develop our natural resources, we want our tourism sector booming and we want our health-care sector to be properly utilized. To do all of this, we need the right workers in the right jobs.
When I was appointed the Conservative party’s deputy shadow minister for immigration, I started looking for answers to this question. I found the obstacles facing new immigrants pointed to an abundance of gatekeepers. For example, provincial medical licensing boards limit the number of foreign doctors in each province, even if they are qualified and the hospitals are understaffed.
Bill C-286 would allow a smoother process for the recognition of foreign credentials. It requires the government to consult with the provinces when establishing these regulations to satisfy the requirements of both federal and provincial licensing boards and agencies. It further allows the government to establish educational equivalencies to ensure that a degree or diploma in one country is the same as in Canada.
