Drug dealers in Maiduguri's Gamboru Medicine Market allege that drugs confiscated after a flood ravaged the city are back in circulation, raising serious concerns about the safety of the public and the effectiveness of regulatory measures.

Drug dealers in Maiduguri 's popular Gamboru Medicine Market are raising concerns that confiscated drugs damaged by a September 10 flood are resurfacing in their market. The flood ravaged the state capital, causing over N1 billion worth of drugs to be damaged, according to dealers. Some dealers attempted to salvage their losses by sun-drying the soaked drugs.

Acting on tips, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in collaboration with the Borno State Ministry of Health, inspected the market, warehouses, and homes of dealers, confiscating the damaged drugs deemed unsafe for consumption. However, months after this operation, dealers allege that unknown individuals are selling the same confiscated drugs in the market. Some dealers, speaking anonymously, expressed fear that some colleagues might accept these tainted drugs, citing incidents during the initial NAFDAC inspection where some dealers insisted their drugs were safe despite the agency's contrary assessment. The president of the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers, Borno State chapter, Jibrin Bukar, confirmed participating in the inspection and verifying the handover of over N1 billion worth of damaged drugs to NAFDAC. However, he expressed uncertainty about their subsequent destruction. NAFDAC's state coordinator, Jamil Audu, vehemently denied these allegations, stating that all confiscated drugs were destroyed in Gombe last year. He claims to have personally overseen the entire process, witnessing the drugs being incinerated until completely consumed by fire. He also mentioned that the destruction included approximately N10 billion worth of expired items voluntarily submitted by individuals and organizations from across the region. This incident raises serious concerns about the illicit trafficking of potentially harmful drugs and the effectiveness of regulatory measures aimed at safeguarding public health. It underscores the need for increased vigilance, robust enforcement mechanisms, and transparent accountability within the pharmaceutical supply chain
