An environmental activist, Nnimmo Bassey has decried the deplorable condition of the Niger Delta region just as he called on President Tinubu to carry out an environmental audit of the entire region in order to set up a new cleanup exercise for the area. He made the call on Monday in Abuja during a conference to mark 10th anniversary of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) “The Ecological Think Tank” with the theme “Advancing Environmental Justice in Africa.”

He said the environmental and ecological damages done to African region by the multinational oil companies must be compensated adding that it is crime to ignore the climate debt. "We will emphasise and campaign for the amount of damage done to Africa region and must be compensated, they have to pay for it.
Bassey also called on the President to investigate the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited for saying that faulty metering was responsible for their inability to account for how much oil is being extracted, exported and consumed on daily basis.
