Community policing and IGP Adamu

Some years back, a South African police chief in a community in Cape Town narrated her ordeal with criminals when she first resumed in the area. The crime rate was disturbing and conventional methods did not produce result. So, she decided to involve those likely to commit crime: the young ones. She identified them, counselled them and got them involved in sports and voila, the crime rate dropped to an all-time low.

Every society, every nation and every continent is built on communities. Without communities, there will be no local government not to talk of state or country. In Africa and the rest of the world, residents of a community know themselves and can easily fish out the bad eggs except the very deceptive ones.

Last Wednesday, the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, kicked off the process of institutionalising community policing in the state of aquatic splendour by empanelling a community to make it a reality. His Ogun State counterpart, Dapo Abiodun, also took the same step. The Federal Capital Territory has also put in motion the process of making community policing a reality in the nation’s capital. Plateau, Rivers and Delta states have also thrown their weight behind community policing.

Its benefits are legion. They include: Support for social protection programmes; generation of proof of address or residency; enhancement of security architecture; baseline for economic planning; enhancement of precision-driven governance; effective service delivery; strategic classification of residents’ society and infrastructural threshold; crime control mechanism; and regeneration and regularisation of migration dynamics, among others.

The community policing, as being pushed by IGP Adamu, will require the residency registration to make for an effective and efficient system. With it, the insecurity challenges in Nigeria today can be mitigated remarkably. For this to work, the police must be the most proactive front in confronting the security issues in the country and anything short of the police throwing its weight behind the project as it is done in most countries in Europe, Asia and America will not achieve the result.
