\u0022Cops must stay out of schools,\u0022 the groups said.

Last week, the Ottawa Police Association reported that a police officer who has been invited to speak at a “community helpers” day in a Grade 1 class at Stittsville Public School was later asked not to appear in uniform or with her police cruiser.

At the OCDSB, the policy barring uniformed officers in schools goes back to June 2021, when the board cancelled that School Resource Officer program after the board’sreleased a report concluding that uniformed police officers make some students feel unsafe or threatened.Article content“Schools are not islands and are not immune to systemic racism,” said Justin Piché, an asand the co-founder of the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project, one of the signatories to the statement.

He argues that the officer who was not permitted to wear her uniform in the school was being accommodated by the school. The Ottawa Police Association has escalated the situation and has resorted to “bullying the administration and trustees,” said Piché. We continue to work to eliminate all forms of policing in Ottawa schools. Removing police presence was step one in our journey towards a liberated education system free from coercion and violence.
