No fewer than 88 suspects have been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for various crimes, including armed robbery and kidnapping, within a 12-day period.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the command, DSP Kamal Abubakar, made this public at a press conference in Bauchi on Thursday.
The police spokesman also paraded a 23-year-old mother, Hauwa Ishaku, of Bidir village in the Katagum Local Government Area of the state, who allegedly threw her newborn baby boy into a dry well with the intention of killing him.Commenting on the incident, Abubakar said, “On June 21, 2019, around 6.15pm, the command received a report that on the same date around noon, one Hauwa Ishaku, 23, in Katagum LGA, gave birth to a baby boy in an uncompleted building and dropped him in a dry well.
According to him, the suspect told the police that she took the decision to dump the child since her ex-husband refused to take responsibility for him and she had no means to support the child. The police have also arrested a 17-year-old woman resident of Hotoro in Kano State, who also abandoned her three-week-old baby in front of another man’s house in Azare, Katagum LGA of the state.
“On receipt of the report, a police team moved to the area and rescued the baby, while the suspected mother was equally arrested.
