Suspended senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan faces trial for alleged harmful imputations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. The case highlights the Coalition Against Impunity's call for an end to political deception in Nigeria.

A civil society organisation, Coalition Against Impunity, has labelled the trial of Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan , as 'a trial of integrity in Nigeria n politics.' The suspended senator is facing charges brought by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, spanning six counts related to harmful imputations made during public comments and a television interview.

The crux of the alleged offences centers on Akpoti-Uduaghan's assertions that Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, conspired to assassinate her. DAILY POST reports that Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, facing charges marked FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025. These charges pertain to alleged cybercrimes, specifically the transmission of false and potentially damaging information via electronic means, intended to malign, incite unrest, and endanger lives while potentially breaching public order. Justice Mohammed Umar presided over the arraignment and subsequently scheduled September 22, 2025, for the commencement of the trial.Reacting to the unfolding legal proceedings, the Coalition Against Impunity emphasized in a statement released on Monday that the trial presents a vital opportunity to curb the pervasive culture of deception in Nigerian politics. In a statement attributed to its chairman, Olufemi Ayoade, in Abuja on Monday, the group characterized Akpoti-Uduaghan's allegations as a reckless disregard for the trust placed in her by the Nigerian populace, painting national leaders as criminals without any corroborating evidence. Ayoade asserted, 'This is not merely a trial of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan; it is a trial of integrity in Nigerian politics. And when the dust settles, let it be unequivocally known that individuals who fabricate lies, concoct false alarms, and drag the reputations of others through the mire will be held accountable. The truth is paramount. Justice must prevail. 'This seems no coincidence that these allegations surfaced during a period of heightened political tensions, a textbook tactic from the playbook of a desperate politician who perceives fleeting media popularity as a substitute for credibility. However, falsehoods, no matter how forcefully propagated, inevitably crumble under the weight of truth. 'Today marks a pivotal moment in the battle against reckless political propaganda and the weaponization of falsehoods for personal and political gain. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is scheduled to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja in a case initiated by a petition from the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, concerning the false and potentially dangerous claims she made, alleging an assassination plot by Senator Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. ' As the court proceedings commence today, the Nigerian people must remain vigilant observers. The era where politicians can make outlandish assertions without facing consequences must conclude. The law must take its full course, not only to ensure justice for the individuals slandered by her false accusations but also to send a powerful message that politics should not be debased into character assassination and malicious lies.
