A co-worker of the slain Pickering casino security guard has set up a fundraiser to help the victim’s family.for the family of 34-year-old Michael Ferdinand – who he calls “a hero” – which has so far raised more than $14,000 from over 200 donors as of Thursday afternoon, more than half of its $25,000 goal.Cuellar wrote the fund was set up “to help the process of healing and ease a little bit of pressure off of his wife Mara and family.

“Mike was such a bright light and electric soul to everyone’s life he came across. You really didn’t have to know Mike very well to feel his love and genuine personality radiate from within him. Mike made each and every one of us feel seen and heard, he was constantly checking in on every individual he encountered in his daily life, and made each and every one of us feel so, so special.”Thanks for signing up!The next issue of Your Midday Sun will soon be in your inbox.

Cueller says Ferdinand was married but had no children. He said the fund is to support his wife and extended family.“Our brother was taken from us from way too soon by a senseless act of gun violence that had no reason to ever be escalated to that extent,” he wrote. Cueller also added he hopes the casino and its owners, Great Canadian Entertainment, “take care of any costs, bills and funeral arrangements the family may have to bear, so we know that they stand with us during this extremely dark time. As of this moment, nothing has been made aware to us. but we remain hopeful.”Postmedia is committed to maintaining a lively but civil forum for discussion and encourage all readers to share their views on our articles.
