The recent closure of Nigeria border posts by the Federal Government is meant to check insecurity and boost the economy, the Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Aliyu Dahiru, has said.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin at the weekend, Dahiru, who is ACG in charge of Customs Inspection, Investigation and Enforcement said that all the seized goods including the rice seized from Mount Olive Warehouse in Ilorin by the Special Task Force are presently being investigated by the Customs headquarters.
He explained that the Special Taskforce set up to mount surveillance in the six zones of the country are to check the proliferation of arms that made the nation insecure, check illegal importation of rice and second-hand clothes as well as illegal exportation of petroleum products out of the country.
Dahiru said that the task force that operated in the North Central zone had intercepted 600 drums of petroleum products and 16,000 empty drums in Chikanda, 629 bags of rice in Ilorin both in Kwara State. He said that 20 vehicles loaded with imported rice were seized in Niger State while another consignment of rice was seized in Afikpo in Bende Local Government Area of Benue State.
