Severe heatwaves fueled by climate change are wreaking havoc on yam farmers in Taraba state, Nigeria, jeopardizing their livelihoods. Meanwhile, a new report by Oxfam reveals a concerning lack of gender focus in Nigeria's climate finance projects, raising questions about the country's commitment to addressing the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women.

Climate change-induced heatwaves are devastating yam farmers and other agricultural communities in Taraba state, Nigeria . The extreme temperatures are disrupting crop cycles, reducing yields, and threatening the livelihoods of thousands of people who depend on agriculture for their income. This comes as a new report by Oxfam reveals that Nigeria 's commitment to addressing the gendered impacts of climate change in its climate finance projects is lacking.

Only 16 percent of Nigeria's climate change projects included gender as a key objective, and a mere 1 percent prioritized gender equality as the main goal. Experts warn that this lack of focus on women's specific needs, particularly in rural communities heavily reliant on agriculture, could exacerbate existing inequalities and hinder effective climate action. The report, titled 'Fact sheet: The state of climate finance in Nigeria,' highlights that Nigeria received $4.93 billion in international climate finance between 2015 and 2021. However, 69 percent of the 828 projects funded did not incorporate gender considerations. Oxfam calls for greater attention to gender-responsive policies and investments to ensure that women farmers and other vulnerable groups have equal access to resources and opportunities to adapt to climate change. The report also sheds light on Nigeria's reliance on concessional loans from multilateral organizations like the World Bank, which constitute 64 percent of total climate finance. While these loans support critical climate initiatives, the growing debt burden raises concerns about future budgetary constraints on social programs that benefit women and marginalized communities. Oxfam emphasizes the need for Nigeria to increase its domestic contribution to climate finance and prioritize effective governance at both national and sub-national levels to ensure equitable and sustainable development
