The Diocesan Bishop of Anglican Communion, Lagos, Rt Rev Humphrey Olumakaiye, and a popular evangelist, Rev Esther Ajayi, have called on the international community to stop the attacks on foreign national in South Africa.
He said, “As a church, we are saddened by the inhumane treatment of Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa and we utterly condemn xenophobia in all its appearances, whether tacitly or full-blown. We also want to advise the government of South Africa not to sweep this issue under the carpet, considering we are all human, created in God’s Image.
“Henceforth, no country or people must be allowed to harass, humiliate or intimidate our people. The principle of reciprocity must be applied in our dealings with other nations and their people,” he said. A former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr Yemi Farounbi, said South African youths were being encouraged to attack Nigerians and other foreign nationals because of the campaign messages of some leaders of the African National Congress, the ruling party in the country.
